About Yakuouji Temple

Yakuouji Temple (大乗山 薬王寺, Daijyōzan Yakuōji) is a Nichiren Buddhist temple located in Ogigayatsu, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

Founded in 1293 (the 1st year of Einin) by the Buddhist monk Nichizō, the temple has a history of over 700 years. Originally a Shingon Buddhist temple called "Yakōji," it was converted to the Nichiren sect by Nichizō Shōnin.

The temple grounds contain a memorial tower (供養塔) for Tokugawa Tadanaga (徳川忠長), the younger brother of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The temple crest features the three-leaf hollyhock (三つ葉葵), symbol of the Tokugawa family.

There is also a hokyōintō (宝篋印塔, a type of stone funerary tower) for the wife and daughter of Gamo Tadachika (蒲生忠知), lord of Matsuyama Castle.
